Artspace Bremerhaven is an international art festival held in Bremerhaven, Germany, where empty storefronts, apartments, courtyards, and public walls are transformed into temporary exhibition spaces by visual artists.
During the festival, Nijstad created a large-scale mural over the course of four days, painting directly on the wall using acrylic markers, masking fluid and airbrush. Arriving at the location with a digital archive of his sketchbook drawings, he projected various images onto the walls to find a piece that fit the environment. After selecting and tracing one drawing to serve as the hook for the overall theme of the mural, he built out the rest of the composition. To tie the entire room together, he ran one continuous airbrushed line through the space, creating frames for the drawings while connecting difficult corners, windows, and door openings into a single cohesive structure.
